bio

Santiago (Chile), 1963. Lives in Santiago (Chile). Design, Film, Photography, Video, Web.

Bio

German Bobe has been described as “the enfant terrible” of Chilean art: an apt way to refer to a creator who crosses unhindered the borders of areas such as museums, art galleries, the world of music videos and experimentation. In his works, German Bobe mixes media such as video, photography and painting.

German Bobe’s work is characterized by a mixture of styles, with images ranging from the classical to the typically kitsch – always with an eye for the social and critical dimension. His works frequently deal with questions of gender and sexuality, as in the video “Portrait of Christophe in my Mind” (1988), in which he celebrates the forms of the male body.
In the video “Hombres Muertos de Amor” (1991) he looks at the nature of human relations and the way in which these are mediatized by the dominant ideologies disseminated by the mass media and religion.
Religion is the central theme of the video “Matsushima Ondo” (1991). In this work, Bobe combines audiovisual collage with animation. The Asian-influenced soundtrack suggests a comparison between religious devotion and sexual representation, inviting the viewer to make connections and recognize the irony of certain similarities.
In the video “La Profesora” (1993), Bobe raises political and social questions about the prevalence of the English language in post- and neo-colonialist societies.
More recently, he has created works for the Internet, such as “Love Modern” (2001), in which he reflects on the environment of electronic music. His works are shown in various video festivals and samples in Latin America, the United States and Europe.

Bobe belongs to an international generation of artists. One of Bobe's biggest concerns is "how to be happy in Chile", a concern he believes he shares with his compatriots. This theme is expressed in experimental videos that evoke the social and political conflicts of contemporary Chile without narrative or commentary. In addition to his video art, Bobe works in photography, painting, design, performance, web and film. His videoworks frequently refer to his other works and, indeed, his entire artistic oeuvre is interconnected and occasionally self-reflexive. He mingles classic images with the baroque and kitsch, arriving at a glorious confusion of post-modern aesthetics and social consciousness. His video collages mix live action with photographs, graphic works, paintings, drawings, and religious imagery.
